IEM Oakland to Feature $200,000 PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS Tournament

The Intel Extreme Masters Oakland event will feature a $200,000 tournament for PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS. Set to take place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California for its 2017 installation, IEM is one of the longest-running series of international esports tournaments, first beginning in 2007. The events have featured major titles such as Starcraft II, Quake Live, League of Legends, and Hearthstone in the past, held in cities all around the globe. As one of the most popular games of 2017, PUBG has amassed a massive following of fans since its launch into 'Early Access' on Steam back in mid-March. Ever since its release, it has toppled titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 in the concurrent player count, along with selling over 10 million copies in under six months. Between November 18th and November 19th, 20 teams of four players each will face off against one another in a total of 8 matches across the 2 days, with points being distributed based on finishing position and kills per each match. When asked about the opportunity, Michal Blicharz, Vice President Pro Gaming at ESL, mentioned how the esports community has been waiting for a 'game changer,' with PUBG potentially being just that.

“Everyone’s been waiting for the title that will come in and be a game changer for esports and it seems like PUBG could be it..."

It’s different, it’s new, and it’s growing at an unprecedented rate. We’re thrilled to be giving the game its competitive debut in North America.”

With 20 teams involved, half will be invited by Bluehole and IEM, while the others will need to battle it out in a set of qualifiers. No teams have been confirmed at the time of writing. x Full information regarding the tournament can be found below, or on the official PUBG Invitational Event Page. x
