Was there ever any doubt? South Korea are the first Overwatch World Champions after their win at the inaugural World Cup at Blizzcon.
It was a dominant tournament for the Korean team, who didn’t drop so much as a single map throughout the event. After taking down pre-tournament favourites Sweden in the semi-finals, they made short work of Russia in the finals, stomping them in a 4-0 sweep.
The standout factor for South Korea throughout the event was their superior teamwork. While they certainly had some stand-out games from their star players, where other teams relied on such performances for success Korea facilitated them through superior coordination and support.
While in a traditional-style World Cup of national teams South Korea certainly seem like the dominant force in Overwatch right now, it will be interesting to see how things play out in the remainder of OGN’s APEX tournament, for which many of the west’s stars will return to mixed-nationality teams.
