Cloud9’s Jake ‘Stewie2K’ Yip clutched a round in the most unlikely during the iBUYPOWER Masters Grand Final against Renegades.
Coming off of a grueling semi-final match against Team Liquid, Cloud9 faced the majority Australian roster of Renegades in the final.
The first map in the best of three was on Mirage and Cloud9 got off to a good start on the CT side, holding a 10-5 lead by halftime.
However, Renegades had shown great determination and composure throughout the tournament, including during their comfortable 2-0 win over OpTic Gaming in the semifinals.
The Australians looked set to get off to a good start in the second half when they managed to get themselves into a 2 vs. 1 situation with only Stewie left alive.
However, the T side of Cloud9 had managed to plant the bomb so Renegades needed to get the defuse. They seemed perfectly set to achieve this when they dropped a smoke and began defusing with Stewie unable to see them.
However, the 19 year old stunned his opposition by simply running into the smoke and knifing both of them to prevent the defuse and win the round.
Renegades were never able to to bounce back from the devastating pistol round loss and Cloud9 quickly closed the map out 16-6.
The second map, Train, was a much closer affair but Cloud9 once again prevailed with a 19-16 overtime win to take the series 2-0.
The win at iBUYPOWER Masters netted Cloud9 $50,000 and is their second tournament win in less than a month after taking the DreamHack Denver 2017 title in October.
Both Cloud9 and Renegades will be on show at the $300,000 IEM Oakland event which begins on November 14th.
