Sledgehammer Games haven't even launched their Call of Duty title for 2017, but rumors of 2018's title have already hit the internet.
The three-year cycle for Activision's series currently rotates between developers Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer and Treyarch. This gives each studio a total of three years to build a title, and like clockwork, they're released the first weekend of November every year.
Infinity Ward's Infinite Warfare launched in 2016 and it was a difficult year for Activision as their fiercely loyal fan base showed for the first time they're not always going to buy a game if the Call of Duty label is on it.
Despite the setback, the company's share price wasn't affected too much, and with Call of Duty WWII the most anticipated game of the 2017 holiday season
, things are looking back on track.
For some analysts though, that means their attention has turned to the future of the publisher, and market analysts Cowen and Company recently downgraded Activision's shares based on concerns over the performance of the Overwatch League.
For most that financial information is a little boring, but one key part people will be interested in is that the title Black Ops 4 was mentioned as Treyarch's Call of Duty's 2018 game.
The information was presented during the report without comment, so it's unclear if this was either a guess or an accidental leak of inside information.
The Black Ops series launched on the 9th of November 2010, set during the Cold War, and went on to become the fifth biggest selling title for the Xbox 360. The competitive scene was vibrant for the game in both Europe and North America as independent tournament hosted tournaments across both continents.
Black Ops II was launched two years later in 2012 and is widely considered one of the best Call of Duty games of all time. The concept of the Call of Duty world championships was also introduced, marking the first time Activision hosted a true competitive event, including a $1 million prize pool.
The most recent Black Ops game, number 3, was launched in November 2015, and was the first game to include wall running as part of the advanced movement era.
If Activision and Treyarch were to release Black Ops 4, it would be the first time in Call of Duty history that they've launched a fourth game in a series of stories, with the Modern Warfare series also on three currently.
For those dying to find out 2018's name, unfortunately, it's unlikely we'll find out until the middle of 2018 when information is usually announced.
