Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released in November of 2019 to favorable reviews from fans of the Star Wars series. Going forward, what can we expect to see from the Dark Souls-like action-adventure? Is a sequel in the works?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a single-player Star Wars adventure set after the events of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith after the Jedi were largely wiped out from the galaxy.

With a rating of around 80 on Metacritic, the game was a breath of fresh air when compared to the previous Star Wars: Battlefront titles published by EA that were marred by its heavy emphasis on loot boxes and in-game purchases.

What is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order?

Developed by Respawn Entertainment — who gained a huge reputation after the release of Apex Legends in 2019 — the story-driven single-player experience focuses on Cal Kestis and his life in the shadows.

Fallen Order explores the time after Star Wars’ universe-shattering Order 66, through the eyes of hidden Jedi Cal.

Set five years after Revenge of The Sith, Order 66 sees Jedi being hunted down and destroyed. Traveling through various unique planets to uncover a gripping mystery and learning about the Jedi Order, Cal embarks on a thrilling journey of self-discovery alongside Dark-Souls like boss battle encounters.

Will Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order have a sequel?

On January 13, 2021, it was revealed by WIRED that Lucasfilm Games would be teaming up with Ubisoft to create a new, untitled Star Wars Project.

While Fallen Order still receives updates to the game, with a recent patch dropping on next-gen consoles that takes advantage of the new hardware options, such as frame rate and resolutions increases, it still remains to be seen as to whether or not the game will receive a sequel.

The reveal of this title does seem to downplay that possibility, as it would be unlikely that multiple titles would be released around the same time to compete with one another.

Ubisoft’s upcoming title is still in an incredibly early phase of development, though, as Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment is still actively recruiting for additions to the studio.

Does the EA exclusivity deal still stand?

Up until this point, EA has had the sole right to create and publish Star Wars game content, and this information certainly shakes up the narrative for what plans can see going forward.

It looks as if the exclusivity deal is no longer in place, due to Ubisoft’s involvement with this title, which is still incredibly early in development.

Disney’s Sean Shoptaw, Senior VP of Global Games and Interactive Experiences at Disney told WIRED that EA continues to be an important partner going forward, but that they felt as if there was also room for other developers to work within the previously capped off Star Wars gaming space.

Ubisoft and EA respond

In separate posts, Ubisoft and EA have both responded to the information dropped by WIRED. In a simple post set out with checklist-style ticks, EA stated that they love Star Wars, and are looking forward to making more Star Wars games while continuing the longstanding partnership that Lucasfilm Games has had with them. Finishing off the tweet with a cute reference to popular droid BD-1 from Fallen Order, fans seem like they will be able to expect a plethora of new StarWars-based content to get their hands on in future.

In a news post to Ubisoft’s site, they detail that they will be creating “a story-driven, open-world experience within the Star Wars galaxy that will also utilize the studio’s cutting-edge technology and advancements, including the Snowdrop engine” and that they are “pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love.”

Ubisoft’s Creative Director Julian Gerighty stated that the game will be a welcome departure from the world of Tom Clancy’s The Division, and will be creating something truly different for them, while also upping the bar within the industry.
