Having received new-gen updates since November 2019, players are more than ready for their next adventure with Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. From a rundown on exciting gameplay changes to expect from a look ahead at early plot details, here’s everything we know about the game so far.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Release Date

EA has confirmed that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will finally have players swinging lightsabers on April 28, 2023.

During The Game Awards 2022, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was announced to be releasing on March 17, 2023. A delay threw a spanner in the works though, hence we now have the revised date.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Platforms

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S | X, and PC simultaneously.

Unlike the first entry in the series, this sequel will not be available on previous-gen hardware, meaning those on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will not be able to play. The reason for this pivot is due to the development team’s ambitions in creating a product “at a fidelity that’s much above anything [they’ve] ever developed before,” Game Director Stig Asmussen said.

This means fans can expect improved visuals, greater performance, faster load times, and even new features exclusive to PS5 such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Trailers

The first trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was released on May 27, 2022, during Star Wars Celebration. You can check it out below:

The second trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor debuted on December 9, 2022, during The Game Awards 2022.

With the release of the game getting very close, EA decided to tease fans and hopeful buyers even more with the Official Story Trailer to give even more snippets of the new game’s narrative.

And finally, EA dropped the final gameplay trailer before the game’s release, which also teased some big story elements. It shows off new characters, some boss fights, and even what could be the game’s main villain.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Editions

As you would expect from a game of this caliber, multiple editions and special pre-order bonuses are on offer with the release of Jedi: Survivor. In total, three options are available with the Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s Editions all arriving with their own exclusive goodies.

For the Deluxe, players get two additional in-game cosmetic sets with the ‘New Hero’ and ‘Galactic Hero’ skin sets. While for the Collector’s Edition, players get those in-game items along with a full-size, functional Cal Kestis replica Lightsaber hilt and its Magnetic Box.

By pre-ordering any of the three editions, you can also get your hands on the ‘Jedi Survival’ cosmetic pack to boot.

The Colector’s Edition was available through Limited Run Games for just a brief period.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Gameplay Changes

Stig Asmussen of Respawn Entertainment stated that the next game “will expand on the series’ dynamic combat in new and innovative ways. In order to survive, Cal must learn new skills and grow his connection with the Force.”

“Millions of Star Wars fans have been captivated by the story of Cal Kestis, and we’re thrilled to be working with the world-class developers at Respawn to continue this epic tale,” added Douglas Reilly, the vice president of Lucasfilm Games.

One such way the core gameplay loop is expanding is through five new fighting stances, Asmussen revealed in a recent Game Informer interview. Players will have to change stances on the fly, reacting to certain enemy types and combat arenas in order to make the most of any given situation. For instance, one option is to run in with dual lightsabers, a great option for close-range fights. While an alternative approach has Cal wielding a lightsaber in one hand with a blaster in the other. Below is a look at all five fighting stances on the way:

  • Single Lightsaber
  • Double-sided Lightsaber
  • Dual Lightsabers
  • Cross Guard Lightsaber
  • Single Lightsaber & Blaster

Also on the horizon for the sequel is a range of new force abilities, enemy types, and of course, locations to visit. When it comes to navigating these new planets, fans can expect a much easier time than before. That’s right, fast travel has been confirmed for the sequel, and Cal can even ride a number of new mounts in Jedi: Survivor as well to speed things up.

Who is developing the game?

Respawn Entertainment, famously known for Titanfall and Apex Legends, have returned to develop Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Taking inspiration from challenging action-adventure games like Dark Souls, its predecessor blended challenging combat with platforming and light puzzles.

Job listings went live in October 2021, to work specifically on “the Star Wars team”, though development has likely been underway for quite some time. In fact, Stig Asmussen suggested not long after that he always envisioned the Jedi series as a trilogy, meaning the idea for the second game was in mind long before Fallen Order shipped.

What is the plot of the new Star Wars game?

The plot of the Fallen Order sequel picks up five years after the previous game, as “Cal Must stay one step ahead of the Empire’s constant pursuit as he begins to feel the weight of being one of the last remaining Jedi in the galaxy” according to Stig Asmussen.

A fair amount of time then has passed since the ending of Fallen Order, but we know that Survivor will feature returning faces as well as some new ones.

Fans of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show have already spotted a familiar foe in the trailer, with the Grand Inquisitor appearing to be in pursuit of Cal Kestis.

Familiar faces are sure to be along for the ride again as Cal is joined by Cere, Greez, and Nightsister Merrin aboard the Mantis. Though this time around, it appears a brand new character is set to join the adventure and even help out in combat sequences as Bode Akuna has been locked in as a new AI companion.
