The gaming community went into a frenzy following the announcement by Epic Games that Fortnite: Battle Royale will have a $100 million prize pool between 2018 and 2019 for esports competition.
In a shocking reveal, Epic Games announced on May 21st that Fortnite: Battle Royale will receive a $100 million prize pool between 2018 and 2019 for various esports tournaments and competitions.
A sanctioned tournament has still yet to be held for the Battle Royale game since its release in 2017, with the genre as a whole still being relatively new when it comes to esports due to the 'randomness' of loot and other in-game aspects.
Although many thought that the announcement included some sort of typo, it later settled in that the title will actually include such a massive sum of money, leading to a number of different reactions from gaming community members across the board.
Whether it is someone in complete and utter disbelief or a professional esports competitor joking about changing titles, some of the best community reactions can be viewed below.
Epic Games just announced they will support competitive Fortnite with $100,000,000 in prize money...
For the first year alone. I’m throwing on my John Wick skin and dropping right into Tilted Towers for the next 6 months.
I’ll see you guys on the other side.

To put this in some perspective, in 2017, the top 10 games COMBINED gave out $91.2mm in prize money. @FortniteGame with the biggest HMB in esports history.

Anyone else curious as to how this meeting went down? “What’s dota have? League? COMBINE THEM. Everything thing we do works anyways, $100 million sounds nice.” *Everyone grabs their office beers and walks out of the meeting room collectively laughing* @EpicGames https://t.co/Yleq6NxfnJ

$100mm for prizes put up by the publisher for esports tournaments!? Where was this 10 years ago when we were struggling to keep the electricity paid at the office ?
What an awesome turn of events for this space. Stoked to see the continued evolution of esports support.

Why would anyone play any BR other than Fortnite now? (That’s trying to be competitive) That’s ridiculously absurd. Must be nice not having a super greedy publisher. Happy for FN ppl tho.
