The first footage Fortnite Battle Royale’s new Submachine Gun is beginning to appear online but players still aren’t sure how it stacks up against its competitors.

The Submachine Gun was added on July 17th as part of the V5.0 Content Update, replacing the Tactical SMG which has now been sent to the vault.

The new weapon comes in Common, Uncommon and Rare variants, dealing 19-21 base damage based on the rarity and slightly more damage per second than the Tactical SMG.

The first footage of Submachine Gun gameplay seems to show that it is almost identical to the Tactical SMG in terms of usefulness, but slightly stronger in close range fights and weaker as the range increases.

Although the Tactical SMG is now in the vault, there is nothing to suggest that it could not return in the future, perhaps even with a slight buff or change to its intended use

Epic Games has been putting more emphasis on weapon balance over recent months, regularly implementing small nerfs or buffs for various weapons as they try to find a balance that suits everyone and allows different styles of gameplay.

The SMG class of weapons is one of most underused in Fortnite Battle Royale and Epic has been attempting to make it a more viable one ever since.

However, the early feedback about the Submachine Gun seems to suggest that it will still not be seen as a viable alternative to a shotgun in close range gunfights.
