The future of fan-favorite esports organization OpTic Gaming and its Overwatch franchise, Houston Outlaws, has been in doubt for a number of weeks as numerous reports suggested that Immortals and current OpTic Gaming CEO Hector ‘H3CZ’ Rodriguez were in a bidding war for Infinite.
On June 7 ESPN’s Jacob Wolf published a report stating that sources familiar with the deal had confirmed that Immortals Gaming Club had won the bid, acquiring Infinite Esports and Entertainment “for cash and equity worth $35 to $45 million.”
With the deal done, Immortals Gaming Club will also take control of OpTic Gaming and their League of Legends LCS slot but will reportedly have to facilitate a sale for the Houston Outlaws due to Immortals already owning the Los Angeles Valiant franchise in the Overwatch League.
As for the future of OpTic Gaming’s other teams and the brand itself, Wolf reports that Immortals will have to complete payments for Infinite’s 2017 purchase of 90% of the company for a reported sum of $17 million.
OpTic Gaming will now be added to Immortals Gaming Club’s ever-growing portfolio of esports organizations, teams and businesses which include MIBR, Los Angeles Valiant and Immortals themselves.
Wolf states that Immortals are currently in discussions about purchasing a franchise spot for the Call of Duty World League in 2020, presumably hoping to attach the OpTic name to one of the city-based league spots.
OpTic’s minority owner, and longtime CEO, H3CZ reportedly “met with Leibman and Immortals CEO Ari Segal in Frisco, Texas,” to “discuss Rodriguez's potential involvement in the OpTic Gaming franchise moving forward” on May 15 but whether or not that involvement will continue is currently undetermined.
With H3CZ’s ongoing involvement anything but certain, the future of the OpTic Gaming brand remains up in the air. The future of the CS:GO roster is also uncertain given the fact that Immortals already own the MIBR Counter-Strike roster after purchasing the brand in 2018.
For members of the Green Wall, OpTic’s ever loyal and vocal fanbase, answers about the future and confirmation of ESPN’s report will be waited upon with bated breath.
