Overwatch League commissioner leaves to run esports at Epic Games

Overwatch League commissioner, Nate Nanzer is set to take a role overseeing competitive esports at Epic Games, according to a report from ESPN.

Fortnite Battle Royale is one of the most popular games in the battle royale genre and they will be hosting one of the largest esports events in history on July 26, the Fortnite World Cup, which will have $30 million up for grabs.

According to a report by ESPN, Epic Games have decided to add to their esports team by bringing in the Overwatch League Commissioner, Nate Nanzer a few weeks out from the big event.

Nate announced on May 24 that he would he would be stepping down from his current role at Activision Blizzard as the Overwatch League commissioner for a new opportunity, but many were unsure as to where he would go next.

The Overwatch League confirmed that Nanzer will be replaced by current president and CEO of Activision Blizzard Esports Leagues, Pete Vlastelica which will be effective immediately.

Nate explained how tough of a decision this was for him to make and promised that the Overwatch League was being left in great hands, following his departure, “I get way too much credit for the success of the Overwatch League. It’s been awesome to be our public face, but too many overestimate my role in making the league great. It isn’t about me; it’s never been. It’s about all of you. That’s why I’m confident the league is in great hands.”

Epic Games confirmed that Nanzer would be working on competitive Fortnite Battle Royale: “We’re excited to welcome Nate to the Epic Games team, where he’ll be working with us on competitive Fortnite.”

It is likely that he will have a part to play in ensuring the Fortnite World Cup is a success, given his background in commissioning the Overwatch League and events.

It’s also a positive sign for Fortnite Battle Royale esports beyond the world cup, indicative of Epic’s plan to continue to support and grow the competitive scene.
