Beauty YouTuber Jeffree Star has responded to rumors that he and boyfriend Nathan Schwandt have split, revealing they have indeed broken up, and explained why.

Rumors first began after Star removed ‘wifey of Nathan’ from his Instagram bio around December 7, and also canceled European tour dates. His masterclass co-host MMMMitchell also helped stoke the rumors by saying “I’m upset because my friend’s upset.”

Then, on January 9, the rumors snowballed even more, as Jeffree Star tweeted “Dear god please stop the pain.” Some fans even became concerned for both his physical and mental wellbeing. Now, on January 11, the makeup mogul has confirmed their breakup.

Jeffree Star and Nathan Schwandt split

In a 17-minute YouTube video titled “We Broke Up,” Star explained why the pair came to the decision to end their five-year relationship. This came just weeks after the couple moved into a $14.6 million mansion in Hidden Hills, California.

He started off by stating that they both still care for each other deeply, but that it just wasn’t meant to be. “I just want to put on record that Nathan is the only man that I have ever been in love with. It’s hard because Nathan never wanted to be in the spotlight,” he said. “We fell for each other when we met, and we fell for each other so hard, and I’m grateful for him, and I’ll be grateful for him until the day I die because this is the only man that was ever confident enough to love me publicly, to love me for me fully. He changed my world.”

The 34-year-old then revealed that family members had tried to spread gossip and false stories through the media. “It really kills me to say, but we’ve had family try to reach out to the media to try and make money off of mine and Nathan’s breakup. I don’t even know how to process that,” he said. “We’re over here heartbroken dealing with our emotions, dealing with things behind the scenes, and there’s family trying to tell the media fake stories to get money out of it. There’s people I haven’t spoken to in years trying to talk about us. It’s been a lot.”

The YouTuber then went on to state that the pair’s mental health played a part in the reasons behind their breakup, citing Nathan losing his grandfather and the couple losing two of their beloved dogs. “There’s no crazy gossip, there’s no tea, this is actually really important and I don’t think enough celebrities and influencers talk about it, and that’s mental health,” he said.

“A few years ago, Nathan lost his grandfather in a very tragic way… We lost two dogs last year… We still haven’t even fully processed that. He hasn’t fully processed his grandfather. We haven’t even fully processed our dogs fully because this lifestyle is so crazy,” he continued. “Me and him have never sat down and full processed our emotions, we’re both broken. We were both so busy being there for each other, that we forgot to be there for ourselves.”

Star finished by stating that he’ll always have love his ex-boyfriend, but that they fell out of love with each other. “He met me when I had nothing, and he never changed, and that’s what I love the most, he stayed true to who he was,” he said. “Nate came over the other day and visited the dogs and it was so beautiful. There’s no custody battle, he can come over here whenever he wants… I think there’s a lot of things behind closed doors that people never know.”

Jeffree and Nathan began their relationship in 2014, and first met when the 26-year-old slid into the makeup star’s Instagram DMs. “We started talking online, we started texting, and then texting led to phone calls and FaceTime,” Star revealed in a 2016 video. “Then we decided a few months later to meet in person.”
