OpTic Gaming’s Ian ‘Crimsix’ Porter believes that specialists are playing a big role in some of the insane comebacks that were witnessed at CWL Las Vegas.

With Crimsix’ veteran leadership, OpTic won their first event after a year long slump throughout the CoD: WWII season, taking the first championship of the Black Ops 4 season.

And a lot has changed for Black Ops 4, not least the move to 5v5 and the new Control gamemode – but also, perhaps most significantly, the return of specialists.

Recapping their impressive CWL Las Vegas run, which included plenty of hardpoint comebacks, Crimsix explained that “Comebacks in this game, aren’t necessarily comebacks.”

Giving the example of the grand final hardpoint vs eUnited (which eU led 236-120 at one point), Crimsix explains that specialists were the main reason that their opponents got so far ahead, and the reason that OpTic could come back to win.

“They had a lead by like 60 points, then they used all their specialists to bounce that lead to like 120 points, without us using any”, he says, meaning OpTic could use all their specialists with no counter -“When we were coming back, we didn’t have to worry all that much about what specialists they might have.”

He also explains that in the earlier match between the two teams, were eUnited almost made a 60 point comeback vs OpTic, it was the same story of specialists dictating which team was on top.

Specialists are a contentions topic within both the casual and competitive Call of Duty communities. Many argue that they are too impactful, and detract from the traditional gun-on-gun style of CoD.

However, there is no denying that specialists can create big, exciting moments for spectators, both with individual plays, and remarkable team comebacks, as Crimsix explains.
